New and Enthusiast Photographer Tips
Using Off Camera Flash David Hobby's very popular blog called Stobist - Learn How to Light has popularized the use of off camera flash and created suplliers of flash accessories and ideas for this relatively new digital photography camera technique. His Blog is about one thing: Learning how to use off-camera flash with your DSLR (or Point and Shhot with a hotshoe on top) to take your photos to the next level. Or the next ten levels. If you are a complete beginner at lighting, no worries. Their onlline Lighting 101 course starts from the very beginning, and can get you up and running fast. (And if you have never shot with your flash off of your camera, get ready to have some fun.) You probably already have most of what you need to start creating kickass photos with your own small flash, and all of the information on this site is free.
Here is an example of portraits taken with my Canon 7D with hand held flash flash and transmitter set at high speed sync (to permit shutter speeds faster than the camera flash sync speed of 1/200sec , in Av mode with an fstop at f11 (for moderately wide dept of field), EV button at -2.0 (resulting in a dark underexposed image with a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec.). The flash had a dome difuser to scatter the light nicely over Anna and our grandson Elliot. The background, being underexposed is dark and dramatic with the hand held flash nicely lighting up everything in its coverage range with a flattering soft side from the side to give the subject some character. Well - Anna and Elliot are characters anyway! An alternative cheaper setup is to attach an expensive sync cord to the hotshoe at the top of the camera and teather to a cheaper noname flash and bracket exposure for best effect. Pro photographers have been using off camera flash for years. Read The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes

It can also be an opportunity for self-exploration. By asking such questions as -- What is my approach to taking an image? What in me takes the image? and What is it like? -- photography can lend itself to opening a creative dialogue within us.
Friday, November 5 (7 – 9 pm) & Saturday, November 6 (9-5) This experiential workshop will look at the relationship between the photographic process (the capturing of an image as well as the appreciation of it) and the photographers’ inner world. Through mindful awareness, we can become more conscious of how we approach the process, which in turn, invites us to reflect upon our ways of being (acting and responding) in the world, both with ourselves and others. As well, engaging in the photographic process with this awareness can encourage new ways of seeing and broaden perspectives toward becoming more authentic artists of our own lives. All photographic skill levels are welcome. Access to a digital camera is required. Feel free to contact Joanne should you have any questions or be interested in registering for this workshop:jduma@shaw.ca .The workshop will be facilitated by Joanne Duma, Ed. D. R. Psych. Dr. Duma is a Registered Psychologist practicing in Vancouver, BC. www.joannedumaphoto.com
