Our Focus - from your editors
This is our first issue of 2008 - a little delayed as we have just returned from visiting 5 continents in less than 3 months! We travelled to the South Seas, New Zealand, Australia and Bali, returned home to Vancouver for just 2 weeks and then cruised from the Caribbean to Madiera to Casablanca and trekked Morocco for 2
weeks. There is certainly something magical about being in the Southern Hemisphere during the cold weather of the North! To get a sneak preview of some of our brand new travel images as they are being posted to our online archives visit our stock photo website www.interfaceimages.com and enter
the search words for Tahiti, Moorea, Samoa and Bali. Our new New Zealand Australia and Morocco photos will be uploaded a bit later.
See below for our Photography Tips for new and enthusiast photographers and local and international photography events. Let us know if you have an event we will try to post it in our next issue.

New Photographer Tip:
Point and Shoot versus SLR Cameras? Which camera type to buy?
Point & shoot cameras have built-in color saturation, enhanced contrast, sharpening but limited choices for flash/lens. Image quality is doubtful for 8?x10? and up (unless 8 megapixels or more) and manual options are available only on some P&S cameras. Today's P&S camera have scenes modes -
good for users not wishing to bother with camera setup details such as shutter speed and aperture settings.
Digital SLR's have little or no image processing (toned down on purpose) so you need workflow solutions to produce high quality output. SLR's have more flash/lens options and the larger sensor sizes and more megapixels means files produced are good for image enlargements. Most of today's SLR cameras retain
auto, semiautomatic and manual modes. Many SLR's give you the option to shoot in RAW format a good choie for photgraphers wishing post processing options (eg. colour balance) and greater tonal quality.
Camera manufacturers are now shipping Point and Shoot cameras with new and amazing features - here are some of them
-
HIGH ISO/LOW NOISE
- SHORT POWER-ON & SHUTTER LAGTIMES
-
SMILE SHUTTER?
-
RAW FORMAT
www.digitalcamerareview.com might be a useful and
interesting web site for new camera shoppers. It gives you a real time list of the more popular cameras as rated by site visitors, useful to know whats' hot today. Check that site for new models and then go to www.dpreview.com for honest evaluations and ratings on new camera models. Then
pick your model and shop for best price and service.
Enthusiast Photographer Tip
CORRECTING WHITE BALANCE -

TAHITIAN DANCERS
This image of Tahitian dancers on a stage in Papete Tahiti is both colorful and educational from a digital photography viewpoint. Although taken with a digital SLR camera, there is no reason a point and shoot camera could not capture essentially the same image while using simple image editing tools.
I was too far from the stage to have a camera flash effectively light the subjects so I turned it off. As I was sitting in the audience, my neighbours wouldn't appreciate multiple flashes from my camera! The trick to getting this shot clearly with a very slow shutter speed is to use an image stabilized camera or
lens with a very high ISO camera setting, zoom in and to shoot when the dancers are not moving as much. The very high ISO creates more noise which is visible when I zoom in on say a face to fill the screen or make huge enlargements. I took many photos in continuous mode. I deleted the bad ones later and kept less
than 10% of the shots.
Technical Details: Canon 20D, 200 mm. setting on a Canon 70-200 4.0 L lens. RAW format. ISO 1600. Shutter speed 1/50 sec, F4.0, Image Stabilization ON. Continuous mode ON, Flash OFF. Post Processing: Increase saturation by 10 points and contrast by 5 points and adjusted white balance using Adobe Bridge CS2 by using
white balance correction tool on a white shirt in another similar shot and batch adjusted all images using the "apply previous conversion option". The skin tones became natural and true and the straw skirts went from a purpleish orange tone to their true and vibrant yellow colour in all images. Modest sharpening with the
Unsharp Mask filter completed the processing. Voila!

The colour of light on stage varied tremendously as the dancers moved around to different parts of the stage lit with multiple & unknown types of light sources. My strategy was to shoot in automatic white balance mode and correct for the colour cast created by the stage lights later. The result
was this uncorrected image on the left. Simple color cast adjustment using a simple color balance or tone adjustment tool would work but I chose the White Balance Tool using Adobe Bridge's RAW conversion wizard on multiple images at the same stage location to save time.

The Harbour City Photo Club is reminding Vancouver Island photographers that MIDNIGHT April 30th is the last day for submissions for Vancouver Island's most prestigious photographic competition Photo Salon. ?While we are very impressed with the caliber of submissions received thus far, we still have room for more", said
John Burrage, Harbour City Photography Club?s Vice President. ?Photo Salon gives island photographers the opportunity to exhibit some of their finest images in an international scenario and we want to make sure hat they get their photos in on time?, said John Burrage, the Harbour City Photography Club?s Vice-President. This year Photo Salon

There are two categories in Photo Salon - theme and open. This year?s theme is Green, which photographers may interpret
as they wish and does not necessarily refer to the colour. In the Open category anything goes. Photographers can enter up to six images, which may be distributed between categories as desired. For more information visiit www.photosalon.ca
