New Photographer
Tip: Managing the use of your point
and shoot flash.
Understand how to change the
flash settings on your camera. Pressing the camera
button with a lightning bolt icon or scrolling the flash
options in your LCD menu will give you selections of
auto flash, flash on always, flash off always, red eye
reduction and sometimes party mode for increased
exposure plus flash.
With strong backlight, force
the flash on to fill in the face shadows. From our wedding
gallery
Forcing the flash on when
taking people pictures on a bright day will fill in the
shadows caused by sidelight on wrinkles and raccoon eyes
from overhead sunlight. In auto mode, your cameras light
meter will detect bright backlighting and fail to light
the faces facing the camera so force the flash on.
Disable the flash indoors when you have natural light to
avoid the harsh and glaring light in faces. The
party mode will help increase exposure in dark rooms so
you can make out the people behind the front row.
Remember - you are smarter than your camera!
Enthusiast
Photographer Tip Producing
Multimedia Slide Shows
Showing your multimedia shows
to an audience? If the audience is comprised of
"disinterested" people (i.e. are not family members
or emotionally involved with the show's content)
then try to keep your slide shows to 5 minutes or less.
(Older folks will remember the boring super 8 movies
without sound and no editing). Keep the show fast
paced and move through the images at a maximum 5 second
duration to keep everyone interested. Selecting the
right music genre and beat to match the shows
subject will make you a Hollywood Producer star!
Hint: Search and sample the
thousands of music archives at www.freeplaymusic.com for
license free home use. You can select short and long
versions of each title and dowload as MP3's for quick
insertion into your shows. Use the free iTunes (from
www.apple.com) to manage
all your audio files and import your music
CDs.

TRAVEL TALES

"Ola" from
Chile |
Chile: Its the last day of
our South American adventures. We hop the shuttle
into downtown Punta Arenas, a small city across from
Tierra del Fuego, at the very southern tip of
Chile. It is cold and windy - even for a "summer's" day.
A quick tour of the town square brings us to a tiny
vendor stall displaying local artwork and beaver pelts
and manned by a serious looking gent with an incredible
bushy moustache and a beaver hat. A true photo op
is an understatement! While David ponders a
strategy to get a quick closeup portrait, Anna leaps in
front of the camera to rub the man's hat to warm her
hands. Everyone breaks out in laughter. Not only does he
willingly pose for several great pics, he holds our RCMP
Mounty doll and proudly salutes. Watch for more pics in
future newsletters with "our new travelling companion -

Anna & and young friend in
Ecuador |
Ecuador. On a sunny
Sunday last month we hike about Manta, Equador. Manta is
a small beachside town with a wonderful market and
amazingly friendly people .
All the tourists go left so we go right
to mingle with the locals and practice our Spanish.
Within minutes we are overwhelmed with genuinely
friendly "beunas dias" and "ola" and we realize that the
locals are actually glad to meet us as they wave and
smile from pot-holed sidewalks, vintage trucks and
funky cafes. Families insist on practising their
English and being photographed with us! We stroll along
a quiet beachside walkway when suddenly, a young girl
and boy appear and ask Anna if they could give her a
kiss. Permission granted, photos taken. David, naturally
asks their mother to kiss him and she
does!
