IN THIS ISSUE:

l

Our Focus - from your editors

Well, between shooting many weddings (see photos below), touring (i.e., wine sampling) the BC Interior, processing many travel pics and playing with the grandkids, our Images Newsletter took a back seat over the summer - but finally here it is!  Our subscribers now include photographers, travellers and dreamers from across the globe so editorial content has been expanded for an international and a local Vancouver, BC area audience. Anna, and I continue to post our new travel and new lifetsyle images at our new archive web site called Interface Images for photo buyers and publishers. With travel plans in the next month for California and Hawaii already in place, look foward to more images later! You must see our new Vancouver Gay Pride Parade Gallery - lots of colour and fun!

For Vancouver, BC area photographers our digital and travel photography class locations this Fall will include the Ferry Building Gallery (West Vancouver), Surrey Art Gallery and Vancouver's Kerrisdale Community centre locations.(Scheduled classes at the Kerrisdale Community Centre in Vancouver are uncertain due to the civic labour dispute). An Introduction to Digital Photography  2 evening class at the Ferry Building Gallery (West Vancouver) starts on Sept 13 and a NEW class DP for Novices starts at the Surrey Art Gallery on Sunday Sept 16. See below for more class details or contact us for more information  Our up to date class and lecture schedule is on our web site here.

See our Photography Tips below for new and enthusiast photographers and  local and international photography events. Let us know if you have an event we will try to post it in our next issues.  ... your Images editors - David & Anna Smith

New Photographer Tip:     Image Organization

Many digital photography software applications (3rd party or camera supplied) provide a default location and folder naming system for your digital image files that you may not want. If you have trouble finding your photos or are confused by the often used default numeric date/time stamp it is time to create an organized  "workflow" for downloading, editing, backing up and sharing your digital images.

From our Living - On the Edge, Concepts & Wierd Archives

I can never remember whether a folder named 05_09_07 is a May 9th or September 5 date so I never let my software use that folder naming system. If you have a second hard drive for a PC it is best to put all images there instead of the common default in My Pictures since it is on your C drive which is more vulnerable to virus attacks. (Mac users can smile!!).

To aid my workflow, I create folders and subfolders with a logical plain English names and easy to understand dates. I also batch rename all images at the same time.  When I download my original images of the Gay Pride Parade to my computer they will go here:  D:/2007 Photos/Gay Pride Parade Aug 5 2007/gppxxx.jpg where gpp is the project's initials and xxx is a sequential 3 digital number.

During my image editing/processing I will create subfolders of the Gay Pride Aug 5 2007 folder such as "proofs" (300 ppi for printing); "tweaks" (editing in process) and "low res" for emailing or computer slide shows. I will be sure to make a backup of both original images and the subfolders to DVD or another hard drive in case of a computer crash. (Did you know that 100% of all computer hard drives will fail at some time in their life?).

With this type of organization, I can decide to backup or copy all 2007 projects or any subfolders in one mouse click and find my many image projects quite easily. You may have your own system which works well for you but eveyone needs to organize and customize their "workflow" so it become "funflow"

Enthusiast Photographer Tip  SLR Sensor Dust

SLR Digital Camera users need to know that dust accumulating on the surface of your digital cameras' sensor can be a big problem. The electronic charge on sensors simply attracts dust. To check if dust is present photograph a grey sky or a plain coloured light surface and enlarge on your cameras LCD (to see large dust partciles) or in your digital software with exaggerated contrast to see all the dust particles.

For a while I simply used an air brush blower without the brush to blow the dust away but frequent lens changes in different environments resulted in accumulation of 100's of unremovable dust particles. The risk of blowing other "junk" onto the sensor is too high so I now check for dust before every important shoot and use Artic Butterfly's Visible Dust wand (a battery operated twirling brush creates a static charge when lightly brushed on the sensor lifts the dust to the brush). It is about $100, see www.visibledust.com and worth every penny.

Some pro shooters I know simply do not remove their lens and have a camera for each lens. I wonder about the air pressure changes in the camera body as you zoom in and out your lens. Does that suck dust into the camera?

There are a variety of other sensor cleaning products, visit your local camera store for demonstrations. Recent SLR digital camera releases include automatic sensor cleaning systems which is a good thing. You have made a big equipment investment, or perhaps going on an expensive vacation - it makes sense to check your sensors
