New Photographer
Tip:
Looking for a new Point
and shoot camera?
In the last year, camera manufacturers have
added new features to many of their point and shoot
camera models to make shooting easier and
better.
Image stabilization or IS (or vibration reduction
VR, or camera shake) is an amazing development which
gives you sharper hand held photos at slower shutter
speeds. Designed to counteract people's
normal hand shaking or body movement while taking a
picture you can now handhold a camera in lower light
conditions and get a good photo.
Hint: be sure to turn off the IS feature if you use a
tripod or stabilize the camera since the IS or VR mode
sensor moves to detect shaking and if none is there, a
blurry picture may occur.
We recommend that your new point and shoot camera have 6 Mega pixels or
more, a view finder (it is difficult to
see the LCD display at the back of the camera in
bright light), image stabilization (for sure!) and a brand name. Since memory
cards are much cheaper now set your
image size in the camera to the maximum available and
buy more memory cards.

Tip Depth of Field
Explained
A shallow depth of field occurs when a camera
lens is set to a wide aperture with a wider lens
diaphragm opening letting in more light. This causes a
narrow range of sharp focus in your picture. When
shooting in the camera’s "automatic" mode a higher
shutter speed is auto selected to "stabilize" the image
and prevent camera shake. To get proper exposure this
faster shutter speed requires more light through the
lens resulting in a narrower depth of field.

wide depth of
field f13 narrow
depth of field f5.6
Shallow depth of field can
be an effective creative tool, particularly when you
want to isolate the subject from the background and foreground. Good
examples are shooting a lone flower or a persons
face. To do so, use your point
and shoot “Scene” mode such as "Portrait" (for any subject
6-10 ft. away). Distracting background can
be purposefully made out-of-focus and less distracting.
How do you get a
sharp photo without shallow depth of
field?
The best way is to use a tripod
to stabilize the camera so that a
slower shutter speed results in a narrower aperture causing a wider depth of
field. Since you may be using a tripod a very
slow shutter speed is OK unless
your subject is moving. When shooting close-up use the
"Flower" icon (for close-ups), "Mountain" icon (for landscapes) or
use the camera’s Aperture priority (Av mode) for smaller aperture (less light, higher
f stop). When you want maximum depth of field use f16 or
higher.The
recent introduction if image stabilization (or vibration
reduction, or camera shake) on point and
shoot cameras means being able to hand hold your
camera at slower shutter speeds and narrower aperture for increased
depth of field and sharper pictures. In this
case, a tripod may not be needed.
Hint: f stop varies directlly
with the depth of field. If available in your camera options,
set the camera's f stop setting higher (eg. f16,
f22) for greater depth of field, and lower (eg. f4,
f 5.6) for narrower depth of field. You can also
increase your depth of field by zooming out or using a
wider angle lens.
