An average scene should have a histogram on the shape of a bell curve.Pressing the info button on many digital cameras while viewing images taken will also provide the camera settings used and a levels histogram.  A quick look at the histogram at the back of the camera may prove more reliable than assessing good exposure on the small image on a LCD screen in bright light.  Be sure to learn the basics of levels histograms - an excellent tool for correcting exposure in your camera.
