Cycling Through South America: 10 000 km to Discover! A multi-media presentation

In October 2004, Josée Clermont set off to ride her bike alone through South America from Ushuaia, the most southerly city in the world, to Quito, Ecuador, a distance spanning halfway around the globe in an attempt to raise funds for The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Clermont cycled through some of earth’s most extreme environments in the Andes Mountains and in desert terrain. She also endured 104 km/h winds, political unrest, bandits, and sickness. For more information on the trip visit: www.trailswestonline.net/josee

Josée Clermont’s passion for cycle touring begun 9 years ago with a trip up the Dempster Highway, crossing the Arctic Circle to Inuvik. Since then, she was hooked! She pedaled across the desert in Australia, cycled in the Alps, through Laos and Vietnam, from Alaska to the Mexican border and most recently from Ushuaia, Argentina to Quito, Ecuador.

“Come and meet Josée Clermont whose energy, spirit, and physical stamina will surely become a source of inspiration and strength for you and your friends and family.” Christiane Boulet, librarian

Bolivia, The Jewel of South America, A multi-media presentation

Bolivia is the jewel of South America. It is the western hemisphere’s highest, most isolated, and most rugged nation. Did you know that Bolivia has the world's highest navigable lake as well as the largest salt lake? In addition to these geographical marvels, Bolivia has the biggest indigenous population of South America still preserving its native traditions.

Josée Clermont, has traveled many parts of the world by bicycle over the last ten years. Her most recent expedition consisted of a ten-month solo cycling trip across South America, during which she discovered an intense passion for climbing and trekking in Bolivia. Josee returned to Bolivia in the summer of 2006 for climbing. Josée wants to share her passion for this amazing country. Come and discover this still unspoiled exotic land.

STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY

Many enthusiast and professional photographers yearn for selling and publishing their images around the world. Almost all stock photo agencies now accept or require digital file submissions. The acquisition of a small Edmonton based micropayment stock agency iStockPhoto by the leading stock agency Getty Images for $50 Million earlier this year has raised the profile of the microstock channel option for digital photographers.  Photographers with 6 megapixel or more cameras are realzing that they meet the minimum technical specifications of some agencies and rush willynilly into the digital stock photo fray. Wow!   What fun!  Let's do it!

Our image, left,  of the Seattle Space Needle at night was just sold for a US customer's trade show display by the UK based Alamy Images where 7,000 + photogs have images

The ease and excitement of uploading your digital files for instant financial gain needs to be moderated by simple facts. Are your images saleable and can you rise above the noise of many digital photographers selling many images through many agencies?  If you can establish a Getty or Corbis Images channel (they are THE dominant players) consider yourself a leading photog and lucky but expect to wait for the rewards which can be huge. Some photo agencies display their top sellers so you can see whats hot today.  IMHO the microstock agencies prey on the naivity of amateur photographers who get turned on by an image sale but forget that their commisson on $1 images is about $.20 and their revenue for their entire collection over a year might cover the cost of a memory card or two and if you are lucky - a small lens. Micro revenue for the photographer - a deal for the photo buyer and microstock agency.

Your editor has chosen a direct and multiple agency syndication strategy with mostly a cruising life, travel and lifetsyle/edgy theme with no exclusive arrangements (and no microstock channels) and it is working.  Typical image sales through these channels range from $US 200 to $US1,000 + with photographer commissions of 50% or more. We also use a channel called Photographers Direct which nets 80% to the photographer. The agencies that represent some of our collection are listed at the left of this newsletter. Our direct selling channel utilizes an archive management solution known as Digital Railroad. Click here for more information.  We are available to review photographers collections and provide recommendations and  a stock photo strategy.
