Editor's note: this issue has been delayed due to need to process 1,000's of new travel images for our expanded stock agency network, client needs, sleeping in...you know the drill.

Thanks for the many answers on why David is laughing and where he is per our last newsletter. Some of you were close and some picked the wrong hemisphere. Turkey or Howe Sound it isn't! The Bob Marley t-shirt is not the clue. Hint: the specific location is actually mentioned in this newletter. I am always happy when I take pics.  Try again for a free Tutorial CD for the first correct answer.  Check our last newsletter. Email your answer here

IN THIS ISSUE:

SUMMER VACATION FOR MOST CAMERA CLUBS   - have a great summer!

CAMERA CLUB PROFILE

The Club's monthly critique is usually the last Saturday morning of each month at the Roundhouse Community Centre, Pacific Boulevard and Davie Street, Vancouver. However, times and dates can vary, so please check the web site for exact details. Meetings consist of about a half hour of business (upcoming events, etc...) followed by an informal but very constructive critique lasting approximately one hour. Bring photos and slides you wish to have critiqued. The meeting room will

be posted on the board in the foyer.

Critiques are free of charge for members. The format is that most people bring one or two photos or slides for the group to critique and offer suggestions (all in a very informal & supportive way). Everyone interested in amateur photography is invited to attend, and is welcome to join the Club to be able to participate in its various activities, including hanging photos in exhibits. There is often a short photo field trip in the Yaletown neighbourhood after the critique.

Note: This is an active camera club with members from across the entire BC Lower Mainland.  Very few clubs meet on Saturday daytime so this may be convenient for some. Guests are always welcome!  Drop in for a visit.

2006 “Fishing the West Coast” Photo Project -Invitation to Participate

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site has extended an invitation to participate in their’ 2006 “Fishing the West Coast” Photo Project. They ask for photographs that capture the essence of commercial fishing on Canada’s West Coast. The photographs you submit to the project will be featured in a special exhibit at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, scheduled to open for the general public in the fall of 2006.  A selection of the photos on exhibit may also be published in a partnering magazine.  At the conclusion of the exhibit, with the permission of the photographers, all the photos will become part of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery’s permanent collection.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is located on the Fraser River in Richmond. The 2006 “Fishing the West Coast” Photo Project is one of the Site’s strategies to preserve the knowledge and the memory of the industry as it is today.  Participate, win prizes, and help make a great contribution to the legacy of the West Coast Fishing Industry! Questions? contact: Michelle Willard, tel 604.664.9282, email: michelle.willard@pc.gc.ca

TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY HINTS AND TIPS

TAKING PHOTOS OF PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW

Local people add color and excitement to travel pictures...an intimidating idea to many of us. Flowers and mountain lakes don't talk back to you but it is people who make the world go round and complete IMHO. Be aware that different cultures react differently to foreigners and photographers. Don't violate cultural taboos on photo taking.  To start: Experiment with people you know, Use telephoto lenses. Try children first ….much easier, few hang-ups. On Location:  Relax, study your site for interesting subjects, get people to be used to you and that you are a photographer with a camera. Shoot around your subject, then move closer & SMILE. Engage in friendly conversation “I love your hat” “you have a beautiful village”  “Can you help me find ---”  After establishing any type of relationship with your subject ask “may I take your picture?” or if there is no common language, point to your camera then your subject with  a “may I?” gesture. If there is a negative response – move on, there are billions of people in the world left to photograph.

school girl in Selcuk, Turkey

This sequence of Waikiki hula dancers started with a simple "peace sign" with one hand as I took the 1st picture from a distance.  Their reaction and desire to pose and be photographed caused a mini stampede - all in a 15 second period.  Smiles everywhere! From the May 1, 2006 Lei Day Festival, Waikiki, Oahu

Using a digital Camera? The BIGGEST icebreaker by far is to show them the picture you took.  Everybody likes to look at themselves
A few tricks.  Let children pose themselves - they’re natural; Say “Touch heads” and you will always get a smile and a laugh. Don’t feel obligated to tip unless your really want to. Want a friend for life? - exchange contact info, send/email photos.

Watch for festivals and special events.  When people get dressed up for parades and cultural festivals, they are really saying "take my picture"  Don't get there just for the parade - get there for setting up and post parade interaction.

Remember -A memorable photograph is really a moment in time between a photographer and a subject and is an effective  tool to get to know, experience & appreciate people around the world.

PORTABLE STORAGE DEVICES OPTIONS FOR SNAP HAPPY TRAVELLERS

PORTABLE DISK DRIVES Consider purchasing a NiCad battery operated portable disk drive with a memory card slot to move image files from your full cards to portable storage without always needing "mains".  Image by Interface founder David Smith uses an 80 gigabyte Image Tank purchased new on eBay for $US 200 plus $40 shipping/taxes. (arrived next day!) You can't view the images with an Image Tank but more expensive models have image viewing and slide show capabilities.

iPOD  The perfect solution today is to use an iPod (must be a model with photo capability) from Apple with an additional connector to match your camera's USB tether cable to download images as you go. They come in various storage capacities (30 gigabytes or more is recommended) and pretty colours AND you can "jive walk" to your favorites tunes as you go. See www.apple.com

Burn to CD/DVD   This can be viable option but in our recent travels to the Greek Islands and Turkey most camera stores and internet cafes can only burn CD's (about $10/512 megabytes) and not DVD's.  Why bother searching for service providers when you can easily store your images on portable devices as you travel? Suggestion: Before you leave, Google the Internet cafes in your destination to get updates on image storage services available.

LAPTOPS   A heavy to carry option but your can Photoshop your travel images to your hearts content while you travel. Not!  Get out of the hotel room and see the world!
