CAMERA CLUB
PROFILE
The
Abbotsford Photo Arts Club (APAC) has
been fulfilling the educational and social needs
of its members since its formation in 1975. The
club was started by a hand full of people who
wanted to share their experiences and help each
other improve their photographic skills. The
club's main mission has always been to help
amateur photographers develop proficiency in
their chosen hobby. APAC is fortunate to have
always had a core of excellent photographers who
are willing to share their knowledge with other
members. There are
currently over 100 APAC members, and they meet
twice a month, the first Monday for competition
night and the third Monday for a program night.
They meet September through June and members
have included their images in their online
gallery.
On competition nights,
members submit their slides and prints for
evaluation and earn points toward advancement.
Slides and prints are sorted by competition
category, and judged. Members compete in program
nights provide education through guest speakers,
member slide shows, workshops and
demonstrations. Photographic Field Trips are planned
usually once a month, and once a year a Car
Rally is organized. Training opportunities are
available throughout the year. APAC meetings are
held in Room 100 of the Abbotsford Community
Services building at 2420 Montrose Avenue,
Abbotsford, BC. Every
year APAC organizes a Photographic Seminar with
workshops and a guest speaker. This year's 29th
Annual Photographic Seminar will be held October
21, 2006. More information on this seminar is
below. Visit their web site www.apac.bc.ca or
email info@apac.bc.ca
Note: Their
annual seminar is a must see for all
levels of photographers. About 600 people attend
this event from western Canada and the US
Pacific Northwest and all the major photo
suppliers exhibit their products. The training
workshops provide all levels of information and
are well worth attending.

PHOTOSHOP ACTIONS
AUTOMATE
REPETITIVE TASKS IN PHOTOSHOP WITH
ACTIONS
An action is
a series of commands that you play back on a
single file or a batch of files. Introduced in
Photoshop version 4, actions can save time and
increase productivity by automating repetitive
tasks. They can also be used for reproducing
repetitive workflow steps and editing effects that
can be shared with other Photoshop users. The
ability to record commands and tool operations in
real-time and to save them in a script or
'action' to be played on a selection of
images means saving time while applying changes
consistently. Adobe Bridge in Photoshop CS2
provides an easy to use workflow system that
includes applying a select action. In Photoshop
Elements 1, 2 and 3, actions can also be accessed
through the Styles and Effects palette and via 3rd
party add-ons. Actions are NOT a Adobe
PS Elements 4.0 product
feature.
Photoshop comes with a
sample set of actions, you can program your own,
upload free actions developed by others (Google
search "Photoshop Actions" and you will find tons
of freebees, some are questionable, some are
good) or purchase action collections from
experienced pros who have developed sets of
actions for image size and format workflow,
special effects, lighting, skin tone effects,
text effects and many more. Copy the action (as a
*.atn file) to the Presets/Photoshop Action
subdirectory.
Kevin Kubota, an Oregon based
pro photographer and international photography instructor
has developed an excellent collection of actions
and other image tools. Click on the link below
to see for yourself.

HOW TO TAKE A KILLER
PHOTOGRAPH even with Point and Shoot
Cameras
1.
This technique is used by
many pro photographers to create those spectacular
urban, city or rural scenics at dusk popular in
post cards and cover shots where the colours jump
out at you and electric lights at night are
accurately exposed. The trick is to know the
true sunset or sunrise time and plan accordingly
and NOT when the sun hits the mountains or during
the colourful sunset or sunrise. Remember
that even though the sky is quite dark to you at
the times recommended, the camera sensor or film
records scattered light and residual
sunset/sunrise colours during the longer exposure
than your eye does. Moving objects will be
blurred since this technique uses slower shutter
speeds.
- Wait exactly 20-30 minutes
after official sunset time or 20-30
minutes before sunrise. In late spring or early
summer this time can be extended to up to 45 or
60 minutes since the sun takes longer to rise or
set as it moves closer to the Earth's poles.
- Put your camera in Program mode
or in Manual mode and expose to the general
lighting conditions. It is quite dark, you
will have a slow shutter speed. Alternately set
your aperture in Av mode for an appropriate
depth of field. Higher F stop =
greater depth of field and a slower shutter
speed.
- Sometimes, it may be too
dark/low contrast for your autofocus to work, if
so use manual focus
- Flash is not required, disable
it unless you want to "freeze" moving foreground
objects.
- Place camera on a tripod or
flat surface for stability.
- Shoot.
The result:
- Sunset or dawn sky is brighter
in the photo than seen by the human
eye.
- City lights are visible but not
over exposed.
- All colours of sunset, electric
lights and reflected lights and
foreground/background are visible and have a
unique glow or colour.... a killer
photograph.
Email your "killer photo" images
taken as above (max. 1,000 pixels on any side) by
Sept 30/06 to info@imagebyinterface.com
and the top one gets a complimentary copy of our
Tutorial
Digital and Travel Photography CD's and
